Evolution of AAPI Celebration

New York Representative, Frank Horton, learned of  Jeanie Jew’s family story and co-sponsored a bill to proclaim the  week of May 4, 1979, as AAPI Heritage Week. 

This week in May was chosen to commemorate the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants on May 7, 1843., and  the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869

President Jimmy Carter signed into law the week long annual celebration. 

President Bush signed into law to permanently designate May as AAPI Heritage Month.
